BARGAIN-HUNTING RETIREES AT HOME IN KF

By LEE JUILLERAT, H&N Regional Editor

Bargain-hunting retirees looking for a place to retire should consider Klamath Falls.

That's the recommendation of John Howells, author of "Where To Retire: America's Best and Most Affordable Places." The book, published by The Globe Pequot Press, has newly released its fourth edition.

"An overlooked retirement area, but not overlooked by bargain-hunting California retirees, is Klamath Falls," writes Howells. "Fishing and hunting are great, with camping, nature trails, and sailing on the huge Klamath Lake providing a full range of outdoor activities ... Local fisherman claim that the average trout taken from the water measures 21 inches. (Would local fishermen lie?)"

Howells also notes the Klamath Falls area climate is dry "with 280 days of sunshine and crisply cold winter."

Along with recreational opportunities, Howells says the "big drawing card for most retirees (besides excellent trout fishing) is affordable real estate. Housing prices are as low as anywhere we've investigated, and considering the quality of the area, it's perhaps one of the best buys in the country.

"Another economic benefit here is an unusually low cost of utilities, more than 25 percent below national averages. This helps offset higher heating bills in the winter."

Howells said he and his wife have been researching retirement communities for more than 15 years.

"In each location, my wife and I try to picture ourselves living there," writes Howells about his research methods. "We visit neighborhoods and residential developments, senior citizens' centers, and chambers of commerce; we interview managers and residents of retirement complexes and we chat with retired couples ... Over the years we've investigated hundreds of retirement areas and examined many different lifestyles before making the final selections for this book." ...
